Well abandonment & decommissioning
Well abandonment is the process of permanently plugging and sealing a well to prevent leaks and protect the environment.
Once a well is determined to have no current or potential future use, this well should be abandoned by a licensed well driller.
What You need to Know
It’s important for homeowners to understand when and why a well should be decommissioned. Abandoned or outdated wells can pose significant risks, such as groundwater contamination, physical hazards, and liability concerns. If a well is no longer in use, or if property development plans necessitate its removal, decommissioning is a critical step.
Our team offers consultations to help homeowners make informed decisions, evaluating factors such as the age and condition of the well, the potential for future use, and the environmental context of the property.

What is Well Abandonment?
The Decommissioning Process
Myers Brothers drilling is certified as a well driller to abandon water wells. All pump equipment must be removed from the water well. A tremie pipe will be inserted in the well to the bottom of the hole.
Step 1
One of our experts comes to evaluate the well, keeping in mind both the integrity of the property’s water table as well as the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection’s guidelines.
Step 2
Our certified technicians remove any equipment like pumps and evaluate the condition of the casing.
Step 3
A long, vertical pipe called a “tremie pipe” is inserted in the well to the bottom of the hole. This makes sure that the entire well, and not just the top layer is sealed.
Step 4
A flexible and highly absorbent clay called “bentonite” is mixed and pumped from the bottom to the top of the hole. This environmentally-friendly material prevents any groundwater contamination.
Step 5
Documentation is prepared and submitted to the relevant authorities, providing you with peace of mind that everything is executed to the highest standards.
